Only 3 out of 5 working days efficient

Germany's largest work efficiency study determined:

  • Average 13% search time (paper + electronics)

  • Approx. 10 hours of emails per week

  • Only 60% of to-dos from meetings are implemented

  • Just under 6 hours of overtime per week is normal

Together with the AKAD University in Leipzig, the largest private university association in Germany, Jürgen Kurz conducted Germany'slargest online survey on work efficiency as an office efficiency expert. Over 1,500 office workers, self-employed people and bosses took part and confirmed what we had long suspected: Increased communication requirements and inefficiencies in office organization mean that only three days per working week are left for productive work.

The study on the efficiency of work organization and electronic media identifies time wasters and ineffective structures in day-to-day office life and determines that distractions such as search and waiting times, unimportant calls or interruptions by colleagues and inefficiencies such as unclear agreements, data loss or interface problems add up to two days a week.

An employee spends 19% of working time in meetings. The larger the company, the higher the figure. On average, only 60% of the to-dos discussed are implemented. This means that 40% of the agreed tasks remain undone - a huge potential for improvement.

Great potential for improvement in office organization

  • 1 day ofdistractions: In total, the average loss of working time due to distractions is 23%.

  • 1 day ofe-mails : On average, up to 2 hours a day, i.e. 10 hours a week, are spent working on e-mails.

  • 1 day ofmeetings : On average, participants spend 19% of their working time in meetings.

  • 1 day ofinefficiency: On average, 25% of working time is lost due to inefficient work organization.

  • 1 day ofovertime: The average number of overtime hours is 5.8 hours per week. This corresponds to an average of 16% more than the contractual working hours.

However, the study also shows that there is great potential for improvement in office organization. Almost half of those surveyed believe that they could work more than 20 percent more efficiently simply by keeping their workspace tidy.
